Nature recycles and replenishes the soil of forests and prairies. Come out and learn how your garden and yard can benefit from this natural process using leaves and other compostable materials and what compost bin would work best for you. Charlie Shiner, Master Gardener and Master Composter, teaches two free composting workshops each month. BJNC also sells Charlie’s wonderful compost for $6.00 a bag.
Composting is the mixing of organic matter such as leaves, grass clippings, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds and filters, and even used tea bags to form humus. The humus can be added to garden beds or lawns to enrich the soil since it has many of the nutrients that plants need. By composting kitchen wastes as well as leaves and grass, households are also recycling and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and artificial fertilizers that run off into local streams, ponds and lakes.
All workshops are from 9:00am to 11:00am.
